Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The plot starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
