Thomas Tuchel Claims Best Players Don't Always Make Up the Strongest Team

The England manager declared that putting together the highest-profile players is no assurance of creating the best squad dynamic. Tuchel suggested that even if Jude Bellingham had returned to peak fitness following his shoulder problem, the player could still have been omitted from the recent England squad.

Focus on Team Spirit

England's head coach also indicated that the Arsenal winger's recall might not have occurred if his teammate Noni Madueke been available. The coach has put great importance on team cohesion in his selection for the forthcoming Wales friendly and subsequent qualifier against Latvia.

"We're creating the strongest squad," said the England boss, who challenged the conventional wisdom that championship teams always select their top forwards.

Previous Results

Tuchel pointed to the positive energy during last month's international break when England defeated Andorra and excelled against the Serbian team in Bellingham's absence. Tuchel observed little justification to alter the squad chemistry which delivered such positive performances.

  • Bellingham left out despite club comeback
  • Foden not included despite resurgence
  • Grealish additionally was excluded

Physical Condition Factors

While Tuchel partially explained Bellingham's exclusion to fitness concerns, he acknowledged that the midfielder desired selection during their conversation. The German coach had previously apologized to Bellingham for comments about his on-field conduct.

"Don't you think that behavior on the bench, support from training, and squad unity enables the starting eleven to perform to their potential?" he questioned.

Team Choices Explained

The coach stressed that his selections were not personal against any player but rather recognized those who had performed in the last campaign.

"What would be justify dropping them and still be authentic with my statements?" he posed.

Necessary Adjustments

The only change in selection was compulsory with the unfit Noni Madueke being replaced by the recovered Bukayo Saka. The manager explained that the Arsenal winger might have missed out if Madueke remained fit.

Other absentees featured Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who remains affected by fitness issues. Given just two more camps before the World Cup, opportunities are diminishing for certain individuals to prove themselves.

Tournament Timing Issues

Tuchel expressed his preference for national team matches to start later due to heat concerns in North America. He acknowledged this would create viewing difficulties for English fans but maintained athlete protection must come first.

"I understand the fans will not like it but for us it's better with later kickoffs," Tuchel said. "The players make the sport and we have to protect them."
