The Beloved Beagle Completely Evolved Throughout the Peanuts Half-Century Existence — Not Always on Purpose

An illustrator rarely completely in charge over their creation. The sketching tool might shake and wobble and veer as opposed to curve — uniformity remains an aspiration, not a rule. Additionally, an absolutely dynamic persona will eventually guide the artist, instead of the opposite. It was perpetually the manner in which the comic's creator Charles Schulz explained why Snoopy, his rambunctious invention, transformed starting with his first appearance in the mid-20th century through his concluding strip showings at the turn of the millennium.

“As my illustration method became freer, the beagle managed to do more things,” Schulz said in 1975. “And as soon as I ultimately created the technique of leveraging his fantasies to envision becoming various valiant characters, the strip took on a completely new dimension."

Charting the arc of the beagle's appearance and character traits might seem tedious in different Schulz archives, yet, luckily for comic fiends, it’s about to get slightly more manageable. Scheduled for the 75-year milestone of the comic's run, The Definitive Peanuts is a deluxe hardcover collector's edition crafted by celebrated scribe the writer that curates the most iconic Peanuts comics and showcases them alongside new historical and artistic perspective. Styled by Chip Kidd, the publication contains an introduction from Jean Schulz, an opening by Mutts comic illustrator McDonnell, and essays from 16 notable commentators (including an cosmonaut admirer of the beagle). Nestled within the edition are several keepsakes, including postcards, reproductions, an embroidered patch, stickers, and a reproduction vintage Peanuts issue.

Expanding upon Abrams ComicArts’ acclaimed Peanuts program, the author's homage examines Schulz’s creative ambition and the strip’s permanent legacy in various creative fields, literature, and common experiences. The final product highlights the way Peanuts has transcended generations, and evolved as something larger than its creator could possibly ascribe to his original vision.

Below, you’ll find unique spreads from this definitive collection, specifically looking at the transformation of Snoopy in the early years.

In his commentary, featured in the book, the author points out how all of the comic's personas ultimately evolved through sheer repetition and exploration, with Snoopy as the prime illustration. By the late 1950s, the beagle had grown more elongated and increasingly imaginative, morphing into everything from animals to alter egos like Joe Cool. It's a stunning depiction of a craft that has declined as the press sector fades, but certainly warrants a spot in the records of visual-art history.

The Essential Peanuts, retailing for $75, reaches shops this October.
